I'm Jose Ruiz, a board-certified psychiatric nurse practitioner in the West Village with more than twenty years in private practice. I take referrals in New York, California, and Florida.

Controlled substances
I prescribe controlled substances, and I will take over a prescription your patient is already stabilized on rather than make them restart from nothing. What a particular case needs depends on the medication, the state the patient is in, and what the record shows — so call before you refer and I will tell you plainly whether I can carry it.
Who I take
- Ages
- Adults, and children and adolescents from 6 to 17.
- Common referrals
- Anxiety, depression, ADHD, anger and impulse control, relationship and intimacy concerns, and professional performance under sustained pressure.
- Language
- Sessions in English or Spanish.
- Format
- In person at the West Village office, or by telehealth for patients anywhere in the three states.
- Licensure
- Licensed in all three states.
What it costs your patient
Fees are published and flat: $250 for the initial evaluation and $200 per follow-up, the same in all three states. The practice does not bill insurance.
What your patient gets
The first appointment is a full psychiatric evaluation — history, what brought them in, what has and has not worked before — ending in a plan they have heard out loud. Where medication is part of it, the prescribing and the therapy happen in the same appointment with one clinician, rather than being split between a fifteen-minute med check and a separate fifty-minute hour.
For complex presentations I have a collaborating psychiatrist to consult.
You will hear back from me. With your patient's written authorization I send the referring clinician a note after the initial evaluation — what I found, and what the plan is — and I am reachable by phone if you would rather talk it through.
Refer a patient
Call or email with the patient's name and a sentence on what you are seeing. If it is not a fit, I will tell you and point you somewhere it is.
